*** EARLY DEPARTURE ***
SUMMARY: 7.0 miles and 1600 feet total ascent.
MEETING: Meet us at 7:45 for an 8:00 AM departure from the old Phair’s parking lot at 3 Camino Sobrante (between Starbucks and Orinda Motors) in Orinda. If you wish to meet us at the trail head, please arrive and be ready to hike by 8:45 AM.
DESCRIPTION: This is a pleasant 7 mile loop hike from Tennessee Valley to the Muir Beach overlook and back. With luck, we will have good weather and enjoy the views up and down the coast. Last weekend we saw a lone whale and a couple of dolphins playing near shore north of Pirates Cove. The wild flowers are hanging on and still quite nice.
We leave Tennessee Valley on the Coastal Trail. We follow the Coastal Trail and the Pirates Cove Trail up and down over the ridges to the Muir Beach overlook. After lunch at the overlook, wind permitting, we will take the Coastal Fire Road and the Miwok trail back to the Tennessee Valley parking lot.
The trails are mostly fire roads and they are in good condition. The Pirates Cove trail is single-track and has some damage from the winter storms. It is a bit rough and steep in places. These trails are all exposed with no shade or tree cover. There are great views all along the way on a clear day. We had a cool and pleasant day for our pre-hike but the next week, fog obscured the wonderful views in the morning.
EQUIPMENT: Bring water, lunch, and snacks as you see fit. Hiking boots are required and poles are recommended.
FACILITIES: There are restrooms, but no water at the trailhead. There are no restrooms or water on the trail.
SCHEDULE: We will leave Orinda at 8:00 AM and expect to return to Orinda about 3:30 PM.
Driving Instructions to the trailhead:
Parking at the trailhead is free but limited. If no parking is available in the parking lot, find a space along the entrance road. Round trip distance to the trailhead from Orinda is about 66 miles and the San Rafael Bridge toll is $5. At $0.35/mile plus toll, and assuming four hikers in the car, please offer your driver $7.00. We will start our hike at 8:45 AM.
