No refreshments. No organized group assembling in Orinda. Drive directly. Expect busy traffic.
This is an ultra scenic, approx. 5 mile hike at sea level with no elevation gain on various surfaces; paved, boardwalk, gravel, grass. No need for poles. Hiking boots, sturdy tennis or walking shoes will work. It begins at Emery Cove Marina where water vessels of all sizes, makes and models are berthed and views toward East Bay cities and hills are lovely. The middle of the hike passes through Shoreline Park where interesting sculptures will amuse you, then on to Point Emery where we turn around and return to a shoreline trail heading West with views of the Bay Bridge, San Francisco and beyond. Check the weather as it can differ West of the Caldecott Tunnel. Consider layering-wear.
Driving Instructions to the trailhead:
Distance from Orinda to the end of Powell is 10.5 miles. If car pooling, R/T mileage
21 X .35 cents = $1.50 per person to the driver based on 4 per car.
PARKING: Close to the end of Powell you'll see parking areas on your left side. Park in the LAST LOT facing the Bay. You will see a sign that allows public parking for 4 hours.
DO NOT park facing the Marina as this side can be permit only for boat owners. A sign indicates this.
STAGING AREA: Assemble at the far end of the parking lot near the traffic circle. Be there by 9:30 a.m.
RESTROOMS: There are public restrooms near the parking lot. There may be a porta-potty along the way.
WATER: Bring water.
The hike should take between 2 - 2.5 hours.
AFTER: You might want to further explore Emeryville on the East side of Powell Street. Bay Street shopping features well known retailers. Bay Street Plaza has many restaurants and stores.
For one stop shopping and eating consider IKEA which has a restaurant.
