DESCRIPTION OF HIKE: This is a 12 mile hike with 2800ft of total elevation gain. We start at the far end of the car park at Rodeo Beach (meet by the showers and bathrooms). The hike starts with a steep climb (with some steps) to the ridge above with fabulous views and pleasant wind (could be cold if fog predicted for the day of the hike). The path then descends very steeply into Tennessee valley. This path has loose gravel on it and you have to be sure of your footing.

We then climb out of the valley along a broad but steep dirt track to the next ridge. The path descends slowly along the coast then descends steeper towards Pirate's cove (it is not planned to go all the way down to the cove). Parts of the path are steep with loose gravel. We climb to the next ridge where we propose to have lunch with a fabulous view over the ocean (weather permitting). From there we have a long steep climb to the start of Fox Trail which we descend into Tennessee Valley. We will be passing toilet facilities (but no water). From there we climb gradually along Old Spring Trail and Miwok Trail with a very pleasant view over Tennessee Valley to return to the lagoon and car park.

MEETING POINT AND TIME: We will meet at 3 Camino Sobrante, Orinda (the usual place) at 07:45 for a 08:00 am departure. We plan to start hiking at 9 am.

BATHROOMS/WATER: There are toilets at the beginning of the hike and at the Tennessee Valley Parking Lot which we pass on our return, but no facilities and no water during the hike. Bring sufficient water for the whole hike especially on a hot day.

SHOES AND CLOTHING: Boots are highly recommended as are hiking poles. Steep descents with loose gravel on them. Sun lotion is a good idea and a warm jacket for a foggy day.

LUNCH AND RETURN TO ORINDA: We will have lunch or a snack about 12:00pm and return to the cars about 4 PM.

Driving Instructions to the trailhead:

Reimbursement to Drivers: The total distance is 76 miles and with a $5 bridge toll, the total cost is $32.00 or $8.00/rider.
