Join us for a 7 mile moderate hike over the undulating hills of Shell Ridge Open Space. The trail head has NO bathrooms or water. We will follow Briones - Mt Diablo and Corral Springs trails past Deer Lake, then up Deer Lake trail, Upper Buck Loop and Costanoan trails to Borges Ranch (approx 3-1/4 miles.) At this point, almost half way through the hike, there are bathrooms and water; we will take a snack break in the shady picnic area there as well. (Have enough food for a second snack on the trail if you need it.)
After the break we will walk past the Ranch compound then continue on Briones Mt Diablo to Ridge Top trail. The steady climb to the ridge will be rewarded with spectacular views over the open space. Descending, we join Ginder Gap Loop and continue to Indian Creek trail, which provides a pleasant shady interlude to the mostly sunny hike, and make our way back to the Marshall Drive start point. Elevation gain is approximately 1,300 ft and we should be back for refreshments easily before Noon.
The trail is mostly fire roads with some single track. As there is MINIMAL SHADE, hats and sunscreen are a must! Bring poles, if you use them, for the few moderately strenuous hills. We are expecting normal seasonal temperatures, unlike the earlier hike during the heat wave.
We will meet at the old Phair’s parking lot between Avenida de Orinda and Camino Sobrante in Orinda, (Behind Orinda Motors and next to Starbucks). Please be there at 8:15AM for an 8:30 AM departure. It will only take between 15 and 20 minutes to go 10.5 miles to the trail head. Round trip is about 21 miles: at $0.35 a mile, $7.35 divided by 4 people in a car, makes it about $1.85 for the contribution to the driver. There is no parking fee at the trail head. After hiking and refreshments, we should be back to Orinda around 12:30 PM.
Those meeting at the trailhead should be there by 8:45.
