Summary: 14 miles and 2500 ft elevation gain
Meet Time and Location: We are NOT meeting in Orinda. AND we are DISCOURAGING car pools. This is a SHUTTLE hike.
We will all meet at the hike's finishing location: Marciel Gate in Anthony Chabot Regional Park (9999 Redwood Road) at 8:00 am. Ideally, all arriving hikers will be in cars that are half-full or less. This is necessary in order to facilitate the shuttle. We will leave half the cars at Marciel Gate and at 8:15 am everyone will ride in the other half of the cars to the starting point in Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve.
At the end of the hike, which should be around 4:00 pm, we will have refreshments at Marciel Gate before driving everyone back to the starting point at Sibley to collect the other half of the cars.
Hike Description: This is a 14 mile Extreme hike with approximately 2500 feet of elevation gain and 3000 feet of elevation loss. This is the second of four such hikes that will ultimately take OHC hikers from Richmond to Hayward primarily following the East Bay Skyline Ridge Trail and the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Some poison oak has been noticed along the route. (Even though various resources indicate that this is a 14 mile hike, my GPS seems to think that it is closer to 15 miles.) This is a very enjoyable hike with really nice trail conditions, with two rather short, relatively steep downhill exceptions where it is a bit "gravelly".
Bring: Please bring at least 2 liters of water, electrolytes, hiking boots and hiking poles. Layering is always good with the possibility of fog.
Facilities: Bathrooms and water are located at the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve starting point and at numerous locations along the hike, but not at the finish at Marciel Gate.
PLEASE NOTE that driving directions are provided from Orinda, BUT we are NOT meeting in Orinda. We are meeting at the Marciel Gate finish point of the hike. It should take about 30 minutes to drive from Orinda to Marciel Gate.
